MTV Video Music Awards’ Best-Dressed Celebrities

No punches were pulled in the sartorial department at the 2016 MTV Video Music Awards on Sunday evening, but who would after sneaking a peek at the star-studded list of attendees?

It seems everyone got the memo to show more skin, however. Risqué ran down the red carpet alongside a chock-full of thigh-high splits, calculated cuts and sheer numbers – if a little skin was not bared, a whole lot of skin was.

So who are the celebrities who made it on our best-dressed list? Our nominations are below.

Taylor Hill

The Victoria’s Secret Angel stood tall in her Moschino gown. Tastefully ripped at the bottom and mottled with mesh fabric, what might have been a fashion disaster was made swanky by way of pink sequins, reminding us very much of a glammed up Wilma Flintstone.

Ariana Grande

Whoever thought that the petite women would drown in palazzo pants obviously hasn’t seen Ariana Grande in one. Baring dewy shoulders and a shaped midriff, the singer’s dainty ensemble may be a felicitous complement to her disposition, but it does no justice to her vocal prowess.

Nicki Minaj

She showed some, and then she didn’t. Nicki Minaj’s striking cobalt frock was a precarious balance of sheer panels, calculated cut-outs and blue cloth, which hugged her figure before cascading into a billow of fabric. Overall, it sits well on our list.

Naomi Campbell

Always one step ahead of the curve (in a curved neckline!), of course Naomi Campbell would be sporting a velvet playsuit – one of Fall’s most prominent fabric. But what truly dazzled us was the sugary glitter that coated her lips, enhancing her megawatt smile.

Hailee Seinfield

In an above-the-knee piece that is unmistakably Balmain, Hailee Seinfield stood out in exuberant colours and intricate weave details that granted her appearance with much elan.

Although Rihanna was nowhere to be seen on the red carpet, she was unmissable on stage. Performing not just one but four segments, she received the Michael Jackson Video Vanguard Award by the end of her fourth and most soulful performance, in a silver ruffled gown that was big on elegance.

Joan Smalls

For an aesthetic that has been reserved for the streets more than the red carpet, Joan Smalls was walking proof that athleisure is a viable red carpet candidate. Perhaps it was the tanned halter top that gave the overall look an unspeakably simple edge; or perhaps it’s just Joan Smalls.

The best is for the last. We’d like to believe Beyoncé took to Oscar Wilde’s words when he said, “You can never be overdressed or overeducated.” In a semi-sheer tiffany blue gown that gave us a semi-flashback to the 2015 Met Gala, it was upgraded with a structured feather collar and reportedly comprised $12 million worth of Lorraine Schwartz diamonds.

Sorry, Kimye fans. We just aren’t into Kim Kardashian’s came-from-the-beach look.
